Funds will support churches, families, and residents recovering from severe storms and prolonged power outages across Northwest and Central Indiana
MEMPHIS, TN, UNITED STATES, August 27, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ — COGIC Charities, the benevolent arm of the Church Of God In Christ, Inc. (COGIC), announced today that it has disbursed $50,000 in emergency disaster relief funding to the Indiana Jurisdictions of the Church Of God In Christ to support individuals, families, and congregations impacted by the severe storms that recently struck Northwest and Central Indiana.
The destructive weather event brought high winds, tornado activity, widespread property damage, and flooding, downing trees and power lines across the affected region. Many residents of Gary, Indiana, endured an estimated 9 to 13 days without electricity, an unprecedented outage duration that left thousands without reliable access to food storage, clean water, transportation, and other essential resources.
The impact has been especially severe for senior citizens, families with young children, and residents who rely on electricity to power medical equipment or preserve refrigerated medications.
“The Church of God in Christ has always stood in the gap for our communities in times of crisis, and Indiana is no exception,” said Presiding Bishop J. Drew Sheard, Presiding Bishop of the Church of God in Christ, Inc. “Our congregations in Gary and throughout Indiana have shown extraordinary resilience through this disaster, and it is our privilege to surround them with tangible support. This gift reflects the heart of COGIC Charities, meeting people in their moment of need with the love of Christ in action.”
COGIC Charities is directing these funds to support immediate household recovery needs through participating local churches. Distribution will prioritize residents facing the greatest financial, medical, housing, and transportation hardships, including assistance with food, water, temporary shelter, transportation, and essential household supplies.
COGIC Charities continues to monitor recovery efforts across the affected communities and remains committed to supporting the Indiana Jurisdictions as rebuilding continues in the weeks ahead.
